Gabriel Paiuk is a composer, sound artist, and researcher whose work interrogates the way material, technical, and collective infrastructures inform the ways we perceive sound. Operating at the threshold of music practices, the wider context of sound in the arts, and the interdisciplinary field of sound studies, his work takes the form of sound installations, compositions for instruments and electronics, and collaborations with other disciplines. He completed his PhD at Leiden University in 2023 and has been a member of the faculty at the Institute of Sonology (KC), The Hague, since 2014. He has published his work in journals and edited volumes by Leuven University Press and Cambridge University Press, the journal American Music, and the Journal of Sonic Studies, among others. His sound installation work has been presented at Gallery W139 (Amsterdam), LI-MA (Amsterdam), Gaudeamus (Utrecht), and Willem Twee Kunstruimte-November Music Festival (‘s-Hertogenbosch). His works for instruments and electronics have been performed by ensembles and soloists such as the oesterreichisches ensemble für neue musik, ASKO ensemble, Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin, Maurice Quartet, Francesco Dillon, Reinier van Houdt, and Ensemble Modelo62, among others, across Europe and the Americas. His work Res Extensa was the first sound installation to be awarded the Gaudeamus international composition prize in 2006.
