The Locarno Film Festival is a place where cinema is not only celebrated but also challenged to respond to a rapidly changing world. The annual Future of Cinema Conference brings filmmakers, artists, and researchers together to examine the role of moving images in times of social change, climate crisis, and technological transformation.
Born from the collaboration between Locarno Factory, Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI), and Diaphanes, and supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation, the publishing project extends the Festival’s reflections beyond the event itself. Each volume combines original essays, public conversations, audiovisual works, and experimental contributions, creating a lasting space for discussion around cinema and audiovisual culture.
"Cinema—not “the movies,” or “the image,” or “television,”—but cinema, this specific project, this discipline, this practice of a certain investigation, analysis and representation of ideas, cinema belongs to the material world. It is about where we are standing now."
