Thirty years of his academic career was spent at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes, Paris, where he created the Center for History and Theory of Art (CEHTA) in 1967. He also introduced the »iconologie analytique«. His writings range from studies on works of art, architecture, aesthetics, film, photography to philosophical meditations. His models of analysis resulting from a rigorous and prolonged engagement with the object had a strong influence on European and American aesthetics.
