Claus Pias

is Professor for History and Epistemology of Media at the Institute for Culture and Aesthetics of Digital Media (ICAM) at Leuphana University Lueneburg, where he is also director of the Institute for Advanced Study in Media Cultures of Computer Simulation (MECS), the Centre for Digital Cultures (CDC) and the Digital Cultures Research Lab (DCRL). Main areas of interest are the media history and epistemology of computer simulations, the history of media studies, and the history and epistemology of cybernetics.

Stefan Rieger

is professor of Media History and Communication Theory at Ruhr University, Bochum. He was research assistant at the collaborate research centre »Literatur und Anthropologie« in Constance. His PhD thesis was concerned with data processing and mnemonic strategies in the Baroque period; his professorial dissertation was on the interdependency between media and anthropology and he has since focussed on the history of science, media theory and cultural techniques.

Utopien der Kommunikation handeln von etwas anderem als von den Vorgaben der Kommunikationstheorie und ihrer Wissenschaft. Sie können daher universal und gar größenwahnsinnig sein. Die Phantasien solcher medienfreien Zonen sind ebenso vielfältig wie das Spektrum ihrer möglichen Anlässe. In der konkreten Praxis wie im imaginären Entwurf handeln sie davon, mit Engeln oder Göttern, mit dem eigenen Innersten oder mit der ganzen Welt, mit Tieren, Pflanzen oder Maschinen in Kontakt zu treten und dabei jede Vermitteltheit zu umgehen. Was daran im historischen Rückblick sichtbar wird, ist, wie die Vorstellungen und Konzepte vollkommener Kommunikation und totalen Verstehens sich als Lösung je spezifischer sozialer, ästhetischer, epistemologischer oder technischer Problemlagen erweisen, die sie oft genug selbst erst geschaffen haben.
